A dairy producer in Southern Ontario was experiencing poor power factor and unacceptable Total Harmonic Distortions (THD).
Our custom-built 300kVAR Power Factor Correction was able to improve the facility’s power factor, eliminate harmonics and address voltage fluctuations. Additionally, the Power Factor Correction provided ride-through for voltage sags which reduced the number of power interruptions and led to an annual savings of over $20,000. The facility is also enjoying far less downtime.
A manufacturing company was dealing with intermittent power failures, frequent motor breakdowns, and costly power factor penalties. We conducted a detailed power audit to identify the underlying issues. Our team designed and installed a 325 kVAR Power Factor Correction system that not only solved their core power quality problems but also reduced secondary process-related losses. Power Factor Correction add a compensating reactive power to the facility, which helps to improve the power factor and reduce energy costs.
A power factor correction system typically consists of several components that work together to ensure the electrical power supplied to a device or system is consistent and within acceptable limits. The main components of the system are detuned reactors, capacitor cans, contactors, disconnects, and the controller.

A PCS can improve the reliability and performance of electrical loads by providing clean and stable power, protecting against voltage spikes and surges, and reducing harmonics while improving the power factor and consequently saving on bills.
A PCS typically uses a combination of reactors, capacitor cans, and controllers to improve the quality of the incoming power. In some facilities if the harmonic distortion is the main issue, we will customize the design in a way that our PCS specifically addresses harmonics and mitigates the unwanted waveforms.
If you are experiencing problems with equipment performance or reliability, or if you are using sensitive electronic equipment in an environment with poor power quality, a PCS may be necessary to protect and improve the performance of your equipment.
You can benefit from a degree of intermittent power supply failure ride-through. This is, in most cases, sufficient to ride through common upstream auto fault reclosures which are typically 240ms in duration and can cause sensitive equipment such as PLCs to reset and result in lost production time and wasted raw materials.
On top of all other benefits, PCS reduces premature wear and tear—and eventual failure—in your electrical equipment, resulting in less downtime and lower repair or replacement costs. The quality of the power supplied to the loads directly affects their operation, efficiency, and lifespan. A cleaner power supply has been proven to extend equipment life expectancy and significantly reduce power-related complications downstream.
The short answer is no. Power factor correction units just improve the power factor but cannot provide ride-throughs, harmonic filtration, voltage balancing, etc. Furthermore, usually older systems do not function well enough after several years. So, you can retrofit your existing old system with a newer, more efficient, and a better solution.
